The Yankees got battered last night and sent home for the season as the Tigers swept them right out of the playoffs! C.C. Sabathia got lit up as he only lasted 3 2/3 innings in which he allowed 11 hits, 6 runs (5 earned) while walking 2 batters and whiffing 3 as he more than earned the loss last night. Cody Eppley, Clay Rapada and Joba Chamberlain combined to work the next 2 1/3 innings without giving up any runs. Derek Lowe worked the 8th inning and he gave up a solo homer and David Robertson worked the ninth inning and he also gave up a solo homer. The Yankees wasted a good effort by the pitching staff due to a pop gun offense. Eduardo Nunez was 1 for 3 with a solo homer off Justin Verlander in the 9th inning, as he led the way for the Yankees’ offensively. Ichiro Suzuki (2 for 4), Mark Teixeira (1 for 4) and Robinson Cano (1 for 4) were the extent of the rest of the offense the Yankees could muster last night. The Yankees were only 5 of 32 (.156 avg) with 0 walks and 4 whiffs against the Tigers last night. Phil Hughes got the start, but he had to leave the game early due to a back injury. He worked the first three innings for the Yankees last night, giving up 3 hits, 1 run (it was earned) and he walked 3 batters while whiffing one to earn the loss. David Phelps was next up and he gave up 2 hits and 1 unearned run while working 1 inning. Clay Rapada, Cody Eppley, Boone Logan and Joba Chamberlain combined to work 4 shutout innings to finish up the game last night and give the Yankees a chance to come back, which they didn’t. The Yankees lost 38-year old righty swinging shortstop Derek Jeter for the rest of the season due to a fractured ankle last night. He was injured on a routine play in which his ankle just buckled underneath him. This is a HUGE loss for the Yankees. Jeter played in 6 games in the playoffs this year for the Yankees and he was 9 for 27 (.333 avg) with 4 runs scored, 0 homers and 2 RBIs. He has now played in 158 games in the post-season in his career in which he is 200 for 650 (.308 avg, .838 OPS) with 111 runs scored, 20 homers, 61 RBIs and 18 stolen bases. 30-year old righty swinging Jayson Nix will take over as the Yankees’ starting SS moving forward. Nix has played in 3 games in the playoffs so far this year and he is 2 for 4 (.500 avg, 1.250 OPS). 25-year old righty swinging infielder Eduardo Nunez will be added to the roster before this afternoon’s game against the Tigers. He will serve as the utility man on the infield. Nunez has played in 3 games so far in the playoffs and he is 1 for 5 (.200 avg, .600 OPS) with 2 runs scored.

Game #1: Detroit Tigers 6, New York Yankees 4 in 12 innings

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Playoffs by chinmusic on Sunday 14 October 2012 at 8:52 am

The Yankees couldn’t get anything going last night until the ninth inning when Ichiro Suzuki and Raul Ibanez each crushed two run homers to send this game into extra innings. But, the bats went back into hibernation the rest of the night. Adding to the tough loss last night was the fact that Derek Jeter fractured an ankle in the 12th inning on a routine play in the field and he is done for the rest of the year. Jeter was 1 for 5 with a walk in this game. Ichiro Suzuki will likely take over as the Yankees’ leadoff hitter with Jeter out of action. Ichiro was 4 for 6 with a run scored, a homer and 2 RBIs. Raul Ibanez also had another rock solid game with the bat for the Yankees as he was 2 for 5 with a run scored, a walk, a double, a homer and 2 RBIs. Russell Martin (2 for 5 with a run scored) and Mark Teixeira (1 for 4 with 2 walks and a run scored) also pitched in for the Yankees last night. Andy Pettitte turned in a decent start for the Yankees last night, working 6 2/3 innings in which he gave up 7 hits, 2 runs (both earned), 3 walks and he whiffed 5 batters. Derek Lowe brought in his gas can and he threw it on the fire last night. Lowe worked 2/3 of an inning, allowing 2 hits, 2 runs (both earned) while whiffing 1 batter. Boone Logan, Cody Eppley, Clay Rapada, Rafael Soriano and David Robertson combined to work 3 2/3 scoreless innings to give the Yankees a chance to come back, which they did. David Phelps earned the loss, as he gave up 3 hits, 2 runs (both earned), and he walked 1 batter while whiffing 1 batter. The Yankees are now down 1-0 in the A.L.C.S. with Game #2 later this afternoon.

The New York Yankees have added Cody Eppley to the roster for the A.L.C.S.

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Playoffs by chinmusic on Saturday 13 October 2012 at 2:12 pm

The Yankees have added 27-year old righty side-arming reliever Cody Eppley to the A.L.C.S. roster. He pitched in 59 games (0 starts) during the regular season for the Yankees and he was 1-2 with a 3.33 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. Eppley will take the place of 25-year old righty swinging infielder Eduardo Nunez, who has been dropped from the roster. Nunez played in 3 games in the first round of the playoffs for the Yankees and he was 1 for 5 (.200 avg, .600 OPS) with 2 runs scored. Jayson Nix will be the top backup in the middle infield with Nunez out of the picture in this series.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Playoffs by chinmusic on Saturday 13 October 2012 at 10:03 am

The Yankees ditched the Orioles in five games in the first round of the playoffs. The Tigers took care of the Oakland A’s in five games in their series. The Tigers knocked the Yankees out of the playoffs last year, so they are not intimidated at all heading into this series. Here is a look at the matchups in this series:

CATCHER: Righty swinging Russell Martin has random power and that is his main skill with the bat. He has now played in 29 games in the playoffs in his career to date and he is 21 of 101 (.208 avg, .666 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 2 homers, 10 RBIs and 1 stolen base.

RIGHT FIELD: The guy the Yankees really need to bench is not A-Rod, it’s switch-hitting RF Nick Swisher. Swisher played in 5 games against the Orioles in the first round of the playoffs and he was 2 for 18 (.111 avg, .302 OPS) with 2 RBI. He has now played in 43 games in the playoffs in his career and he is 23 for 142 (.162 avg, .577 OPS) with 16 runs scored, 4 homers and 7 RBIs. He is the least clutch batter for either team in this series.

BENCHES: It will be interesting to see how much the Yankees play the bench in this series. Nunez has now played in 4 games in the playoffs in his career so far and he is 1 for 5 (.200 avg, .600 OPS) with 2 runs scored and 1 stolen base. He has now played in 30 games in the playoffs so far in his career and he is 14 for 57 (.246 avg, .553 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 7 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. Righty swinging backup catcher Chris Stewart didn’t get to play in the first round of the playoffs for the Yankees.

The Tigers probably won’t use their bench too much in this series. Rookie righty swinging outfielder Avisail Garcia could get some starts in LF against lefty starting pitching. He played in all five games in the first round of the playoffs for the Tigers and he was 1 for 7 (.143 avg, .393 OPS) with 1 RBI. Righty swinging backup catcher Gerald Laird could get a start or two in this series. He played in 2 games for the Tigers in the first round of the playoffs and he was 0 for 5 (.000 avg, .167 OPS).
